tfw donky.social registrations still not open (or are they)

yeah an explodingheads matrix might be nice

in the other stickied post they also mentioned having bot problems and suspending registrations over it: https://lemmy.world/post/3995057?scrollToComments=true

yeah I was sick this week and felt like I wanted to prioritize more other things over forums

I learn a lot from forums and have good convos so idk about cutting them out totally, cold turkey

but I have also lived without internet and I am wondering about more of life like that

I’m interested, but also was thinking this might be an opportunity to back away from forums a bit for me

we have already bounced from forum to forum quite a bit

well what are your thoughts on nostr

the reason why nostr was liked was to prevent us from having to keep bouncing around as much

wigglehard is bummed out about the move:

Gab will now be the permanent home of the dank, microwave taco community until further notice. I will only use other social media to promote for us, and convince people to come to gab. Nostr needs a lot of development and its current form reminds me of Twitter if it had a retarded cousin. It doesn’t work right and is inconsistent in performance.

Nostr hasn’t been smooth for me at all but I’ll probably figure something out

Lemmy is irredeemable

it’s just that right wing and libertarians aren’t hosting instances, not that it can’t be redeemed

left instances can be “trolled” within the rules plenty

add links.hackliberty.org maybe, they have been around since wolfballs days and someone mentioned them in another post; admittedly there seem to be few users there

I think it’s a little better understood now (this post was linked to)

Blue Dwarf is a nice little forum, glad you found it

yeah idk if the move solves the problem, I was thinking about this a little and it seems people need to somehow be incentivized to talk to each other even if they disagree on things, not sure how to accomplish this

on neutral things it may be mutually beneficial to cooperate, like on discussing solutions to math problems which then could be used for a computer application everyone can use

discussion of migration paths: https://exploding-heads.com/post/792397?scrollToComments=true

we should really continue to post in non rule breaking ways in lemmy instances, maybe. breaks their echo chamber. sometimes mutually beneficial exchanges of info happens

all the OP ones

lemm.ee looks most tolerant of the bigger lemmies maybe

bluedwarf.top is a little text only cozy forum

I “back up” my posts to my computer, then just do a keyword file search to find stuff if I ever want to repost places

Some of the reddit alternatives sound interesting (discuit, squabblr, etc.) even if they have the same problems that may doom them eventually; I just havent gotten to experimenting with too many other forums I guess

MOB once said it wasn’t expensive, maybe a couple hundred bucks a year

you could operate a lemmy instance on a spare old computer for the price of electricity

You could buy hosting like with Dreamhost (I forget if wolfballs ended up using another), I forget how much it is a month, maybe like $10? Buy a domain and have them host and then you just set up the software

I don’t think it’s expensive overall, more probably of the time and effort of coding

there may be more costs

yeah make use of gab

also scored freeforum, wolfballs, explodingheads communities (or just freeforum maybe)

we also need a new lemmy instance to migrate to

edit: post on migration paths - https://exploding-heads.com/post/792397?scrollToComments=true

well the other donky user pointed out that images wont carry over I guess, but text does I think and if pics are hosted by a third party they can be retrieved from there and will show up if the third party is still ok

so, something to think about, a lot of instances have made backups of our stuff up to the point of defederation I think?

example: lemmy.world/c/freeforum@exploding-heads.com

https://lemmy.world/u/ihatetroons@exploding-heads.com

I think their reasoning is defederation has become de facto censorship and created fragmentation problems

even among the leftists there’s been some big defederations (lemmyworld against a piracy instance, beehaw against lemmyworld, hexbear being defederated by beehaw / lemmyworld I think, etc.)

I’m used to migrating, just make sure we get a bunch of people on alternative platforms

Gab freeforum: https://gab.com/groups/72118

freeforum is on scored but kinda inactive: https://scored.co/c/freeforum

We can migrate to other lemmy instances (recommended ones?)

Nostr migration will gain most or many of us as in the post

Dormition Fast Ends (Feast of the Assumption)
cross-posted from: https://exploding-heads.com/post/735261 > via Wiki: > > > The Feast of the Dormition is preceded by a two-week fast, referred to as the Dormition Fast. From August 1 to August 14 (inclusive) Orthodox and Eastern Catholics fast from red meat, poultry, meat products, dairy products (eggs and milk products), fish, oil, and wine. The Dormition Fast is a stricter fast than either the Nativity Fast (Advent) or the Apostles' Fast, with only wine and oil (but no fish) allowed on weekends. As with the other Fasts of the Church year, there is a Great Feast that falls during the Fast; in this case, the Transfiguration (August 6), on which fish, wine and oil are allowed. > > > In some places, the services on weekdays during the Fast are similar to the services during Great Lent (with some variations). Many churches and monasteries in the Russian tradition perform the lenten services on at least the first day of the Dormition Fast. In the Greek tradition, during the Fast either the Paraklesis Great Paraklesis (Supplicatory Canon) or the Small Paraklesis is celebrated every evening except Saturday evening and the Eves of the Transfiguration and the Dormition.[1] > > > The first day of the Dormition Fast is a feast day called the Procession of the Cross (August 1), on which day it is customary to have an outdoor procession and perform the Lesser Blessing of Water.

I think you can still say “transgenderism bad” just without referring to trannys or troons as such, whereas on other spaces saying so is banned for transphobia, that kind of thing

It's a centralized site and idk if it is open source but other lemmy instances are reeeeeeing because they decided to ban less "wrongthink"

Obesity as a Spiritual Problem, the Vice of Gluttony?
cross-posted from: https://exploding-heads.com/post/663040 > There's a lot of talk of the "obesity epidemic" and this is often discussed in scientific terms, about "counting calories" to lose weight, or fad weight loss diets (which can work), or just "exercising more and eating less" > > But I've thought from time to time that maybe this is more of a spiritual problem of the sin of gluttony, and as such it may not be as easily solved by self-will and discipline, but by the grace of God through people undergoing holy fasts for the good of soul and body > > What do you think about the spiritual dimension of the "obesity epidemic", or the traditional idea of the sin of gluttony? > > Catholic encyclopedia on gluttony: https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06590a.htm > > Aquinas on gluttony: https://www.newadvent.org/summa/3148.htm

Best Tips To “Speedrun” To Accomplish Certain Things In Life?

Life Without Goals
If you search on a search engine for "no goals" or "life without goals" you get some sites that emphasize the importance of setting and achieving goals, but there are some other voices who say that setting goals is often an issue for them, so they try to live without goals. Some of the problems they indicate are that goals often end up being achieved differently or on a different schedule, so it seems pointless to set goals, or they can get things done without making it in to a "goal". I was curious if you've seen this philosophy and experimented with it: what are your opinions on "living without goals"?

Is There a Lemmy Bot Guide?
idea for a community like words of the day posts, was wondering if there is a way to automate the process does lemmy support drafts for posts? (feature request?) Is there a guide to having bot post every day like in the title and body, word and definition? How much "spam" does our instance want like this, automated posts to generate discussion? Thoughts on the topic or are there API docs somewhere?

Conservative Christian Alternatives to “Burning Man”?
Kind of been wondering about this, the Burning Man event seems to attract a lot of leftists, but attracts my interest as it seems to also attract artists and artistic expression, maybe a kind of environmentalism, I don't know. Their main celebration seems to have been a repackaging of the pagan event of burning a wicker man, they burn a big effigy to end the event. It's kind of ambiguous about being pagan or nonreligious or whatever but I think there are probably plenty of objectionable things that take place that "conservatives" or "Christians" might want to steer clear of. But, I think possibly there are good things that might be adapted in to some alternative new event or incorporated in to existing events. Any idea about "Christian conservative" alternatives to Burning Man?

Well-Being and the Experience of “Awe”

And as I’ve studied it over the years, I’ve come to believe — like Jane Goodall and Albert Einstein — that awe is in many ways our most human emotion. We encounter these vast mysteries: What is life? How do I make sense of the solar system? Why are mountains so large? How can you make music? And the mind has this emotion that kicks things like wonder, curiosity, and exploration into gear. > > It seems they may... > > > play a role in our health, happiness, and well-being > > Where is "awe" experienced? > > > We gathered narratives of awe from 26 countries and found what I call the eight wonders of life in the book. Recurring &/or Stickied Post Ideas?
