You get a few people who can afford really large servers, have a open federation rule, thousands come and then as soon as they get max market share they ban instances.
I would absolutely love to see someone truly building a Fediverse that isn’t founded on banning instances.
I hate the idea of looking for alternatives again. I do not think I will. I actually feel really grateful that I kept putting in effort here at EH after WB went down, and now it has grown to some degree. If an alternative happens, I really want to be able to go somewhere where I feel like I am not screaming into the void, lol.

This is again why I’ve kind of gravitated towards more free speech with the post discussions with the burgitt instance or slur spam; I understand people not wanting extremes but this is the flip side of that, where people draw the line at what is “extreme” much beyond “extremes”
The real problem, is instance owners (admins) publishing on the web, random stuff from instances they don’t control, which exposes them to legal liability in whatever place they are, ranging from fines, prison time, to the death penalty.
Using multiple accounts to tap into whatever “echo chambers” you wish, is the solution here. It also helps you remember which rules to follow while using which account.
Lemmy.world is how I found this place. I got site banned for something innocent but went back and saw people bitching and moaning about muh nahztees and thought it must be a good place.
Kind of agree kind of disagree. On one side this defederating is harmful for the fediverse and makes it controlled by the big players. On the other side you can create a network of instances where only good content is showed and all the stupid crazy stuff from outside it stays outside. On third side this is just echo chambering.
I would like to see a world where a single instance is either personal or just of 3-4 people (lets say family and/or friends) and a lot of these instances connect to one another. This way if one instances decide to defederate half of the network isn’t lost but just 1-2%.
I haven’t explored nostr that much but how does the moderation work on there? One can just create a bunch of accounts and fill the whole network with porn.
So, Nostr currently best works as a twitter clone. It does a much better job of being twitter than twitter or mastodon. For the most part. There is still some work to be done on discoverability.
That is because the server’s don’t control your identity. User’s push their content to any number of servers (relays) and followers request from all those servers the messages. If one server bans them, it’s ok you can still get their messages from another server.
Moderation
So right now you’re in charge of your moderation. You choose who’s accounts to follow. Some sites can pull everyone’s messages and display them and even moderate themselves. Build a list of users that aren’t spam. But in general you just need to come up with your own list of relays and people to follow. We do need better ways to discover content.
I imagine we need to build in communities and moderation tools. So users should be able to retrieve all post from a given community on any number of relays. If a relay doesn’t moderate at all a user can simple not use it. If they allow viagra ads a user can block it. If a server over moderates, doesn’t matter they can pull post from more than one relay.
This would make it impossible for instances to form groups, basically buy up market share and then suddenly corner smaller instances and push them out.
I’m talking to lots of people about this and trying to get some interest going.
I want to take more power away from admins and put more power into users.
Most users do not want admins deciding what they can and cannot see. Moderation is ultimately a form of curation. It’s basically someone else doing the work of sifting through trash and presenting the good stuff. So it’s valuable. But admins being in charge of what you are ALLOWED to see is not valuable. It’s them using power over you. User’s should be able to over rule their curation.
I think nostr has this potential. It’s the only protocol i’ve seen with this potential.
Alright, you convinced me. The concept is cool bit I would really like to see it implemented in reddit’s form. There is one thing that I don’t like about twitter and that thing is the fact that posts there are made for the whole world to see where reddit’s posts are med to be seen only by one community.

Yeah I’m trying to find a way to get something up with as little code as possible. If I try to write it all from scratch I’m not gonna finish anything. Instead I’m gonna find like three projects and fork all of them and get something working quickly. I hope anyways.
