That is necessary for the current left. In a real honest open debate, they just lose. They make excuses for it like “You’re an evil person using words to trick us!”
They accuse the other side of fascism, but they really are the most fascist. Fascism is “the merger of corporate and government power”. In the USA in 2023, almost all the institutions are on the same side as the left. The only things the right controls right now are some state governments, the Supreme Court (sort of) and the House of Representatives (sort of).
personally I kind of like free speech so I find this censorship to weaken communities kind of, like if another instance came along that allowed more freedom of speech it could put DMT and EH instances at competitive disadvantage

Lemmy is pretty much built around censorship. We are gonna need better tools to handle people actually wanting nword spam.
I really think nostr offers a better eco system if someone would properly implement community tags. If you want users to have more choice in moderation styles.
That’s something I want to work on this year. It could also address community fragmentation.
At the very least I want to have a proof of concept and try to get a proposal submitted to add to the spec so others could build around it.

You get a few people who can afford really large servers, have a open federation rule, thousands come and then as soon as they get max market share they ban instances.
It just reminds me that this sorta app is fundamentally a curated space. It’s only fun if the curation makes it more interesting. It’s not antithetical to free speech values to ban slur spam and needs no explanation imo. This style social media is valuable because it’s designed to give extra power to a select few to curate for a broad community.
